  • RESTRAINT and the SEDATION of FOALS

At the Foal Care Course held at The British Racing School Newmarket on 16th – 18th January 2008 the following statements were made in the course notes relating to a paper titled Foals - Sedation and Anaesthesia presented by AHA Dugdale MA VetMB DipECVA DVA MRCVS. “Foals up to 1 month of age can usually be restrained manually by a single person. That is, when cradling the foal with one arm around the brisket, the foal’s body against the handler’s chest and the other around its backend, (or used to support the tail extended vertically upright), after a short time the foal will eventually become limp. However ….healthy foals can put up an amazing struggle.

    Chemical Restraint

Between birth and 1 month of age the sympathetic nervous system matures dramatically. Until then, the immature baro receptor reflexes mean that there is an inherent degree of haemodynamic instability and neonates do not tolerate sudden or large changes in blood pressure or volume very well.

Alpha 2 adrenoreceptor agonists (Xylazine, Detomidine, Romifidine)

Foals have inherent dynamic instability and their cardiac output is heart rate dependent. Since these agents cause marked changes in haemodynamic variables, including bradycardia and reduced cardiac output, they must be used with caution especially in neonatal, hypovolaemic or sick foals.

    Benzodiazepines (Diazepam – Vallium)

These drugs are particularly useful because of their minimal side effects on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.”
  • REPUBLIC of IRELAND 2008

The Department of Agriculture in Ireland will consider and hopefully issue AR 16 licences for HYPERMUNE and HYPERMUNE-RE for the 2008 season on receipt of valid applications. These must be made by Veterinary Immunogenics Ltd on behalf of the Veterinary Surgeon wishing to use either of these products.
  • It should be noted that the Department will not issue new AR 16s unless the necessary documentation has been completed and submitted to The Department for all previous AR 16s. Please contact eileenbarr@veterinaryimmunogenics.com for further information.
  • Hypermune-RE equine plasma has been granted a UK National Marketing Authorisation by the UK Regulatory Authority, the Veterinary Medicines Directorate in April 2007.
